Cloud FAQ's

What is the cloud?
Cloud computing is a way of computing, via the internet, that broadly shares computer resources instead of using software or storage on a single server. This generally allows the end user to scale up or scale down resources as needed.
Will my site(s)/application(s) function properly in the cloud?
The short answer is normally yes. WebSiteMovers.com has a broad range of consulting services to validate that assumption. We can assess whether or not your web platform will function properly in the cloud before attempting to migrate your services there. With most sites and/or open source applications we can usually make that assessment within minutes over the phone or via email.
Are there different types of cloud hosting, what do I need?
Yes, there are several different types of cloud hosting:
Cloud Servers
Some firms solely provide cloud servers which can either be Windows based or Linux/Unix based (X-based). Cloud servers generally permit the end-user root/administrative level access to their own ‘virtual’ server which gives us a good amount of room to make any configuration changes to the environment prior to bringing your content over to the new server. Usually a new cloud server requires installation of several services potentially including a control panel, if desired, before a migration can be performed.
Cloud Sites
Cloud Sites are essentially shared hosting accounts which provide a bevy of pre-installed services, for example in a Windows based environment, usually the .NET programming language is supported along with a MSSQL database, or in an X-based environment usually the PHP programming language and mySQL database are supported. This environment is usually only suitable for smaller to mid-size sites utilizing standardized open-source applications (Examples: Joomla, Mambo, X-Cart, OS Commerce, Wordpress etc.) Services will vary depending on the provider.
Cloud Files
Cloud Files provide an unlimited amount of storage space for files and media. Cloud files cannot be used in combination with cloud servers/sites or dedicated servers, but do not run applications or serve web pages, and therefore are never a stand-alone solution for web platform hosting.
Private Cloud
Recently some service providers have been offering ‘private clouds’. Private clouds are essentially more powerful dedicated servers that are setup to share resources among several virtual partitions. Private Clouds are perfect for those looking to several completely separate dedicated servers that don’t require a ton of resources. Private clouds are only as scalable as the dedicated machine they are placed on, so limits can be reached in terms of memory, storage, etc.
